As a part of computer security at home i set up a system that would greatly increase the chances of getting my computer back should it ever get stolen. The first level of security was a web cam that would sense movement and starting recording

and uploading data to a web server. If the server received data i would receive a txt message and i could log onto the web cam to inspect.

 

 

 

This level gives the intruder about ten seconds to pull the computer lead out before they have their mug shot uploaded and waiting on the internet. An invisible switch was the next level on the computer which would slow down most people who have difficulty seeing invisible things. The idea here is i intercept the wire leading to the power switch and cut it about 5 inches from the switch. Install a reed switch at this point and once the wires are rejoined i tape it to the inside of the case somewhere near the front ... say to the right of the switch.

 

Once completed a small magnet needs to be held over the area where the switch is installed while pressing the power button. Without a magnetic field the power switch will do nothing but invite people to press it again!! Switch position OK so lets say the intruder had a serious dose of the smarts and figured it all out ... or just didnt give a fuck and ripped the thing out of the wall, the third level of security involves a phone home program on the harddrive.

Assuming the new illegal owner of my system managed to get up and running and jumps straight on the internet to advertise it on ebay. The minute the system connects it will send a message to a server recording IP address and other info to a remote location and an invitation to connect and control it. If the police cant make the bust through the ISP i can connect to the computer, switch the webcam on and gather some further evidence and leave a message on the screen to freak them out a little.
